A plug top is the plug on the end of an appliance cord: it goes into the wall socket and carries the supply to the appliance. A rewireable plug top can be fitted to a new cord or used to replace a cracked or burnt plug.

Which plug top for which job
- 6A 2 pin — two-pin sockets; double-insulated items with no earth wire, such as chargers and table lamps.
- 6A 3 pin — 6A three-pin sockets; TV, computer, fridge, mixer and other appliances up to about 1.4 kW.
- 16A 3 pin — 16A or 6/16A combined sockets; geyser, room heater, AC, microwave or induction cooktop.
Never fit a 2 pin plug to an appliance that has an earth wire or a metal body, and never run a 16A appliance from a 6A socket through an adaptor.

How to install
- Unplug the appliance and cut back any damaged cord.
- Open the plug and connect the brown or red wire to L, the blue or black wire to N and the green or green-yellow wire to the earth pin (3 pin tops).
- Make sure the outer sheath of the cord goes inside the plug and no bare copper shows, then close it and tighten the screws.
Fit a plug only with the appliance unplugged; if you are not sure how, ask an electrician. For 230 V AC mains only — not for DC (solar or battery) circuits.

- 2 pin or 3 pin plug — what is the difference?
- A 3 pin plug has an earth pin that connects the appliance body to earth. A 2 pin plug has no earth, so use it only for double-insulated items that come with a two-core cord.
- Is it ISI marked?
- The 6A and 16A 3 pin tops carry the ISI mark on the pin face, and the 16A top is marked IS 1293, the Indian standard for plugs and socket-outlets.
- What does ECO mean?

- Why does a plug top get hot?
- Usually a loose terminal screw, a worn socket or a load too big for the plug. Switch off, check the connections and the socket, and use a 16A plug and socket for heavy loads.
